WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU SHOW UP A DAY EARLY: FORT LAUDERDALE

So your dispatch ​​messed up and you arrived a day early, now what? This is the start of a mini-series telling you what you can do if you arrive

a day early to drop off or pick up freight in big trucking cities.

City number 1:

Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Port Everglades is a rapidly expanding port located in the heart of Fort Lauderdale. Naturally, this makes Fort Lauderdale a hot spot for truckers. If you have to arrive a day early somewhere, this is not a bad place to be. Outside of the obvious attractions like the beach, there are some nice options to help that extra day go by a little faster.

In no particular order:

1. We will start from the inside out. Located within the port area is a nice little seafood spot called Southport Raw Bar. You can spend less than $10 and get a great seafood meal. They have 4 and 5 star reviews online, an outside patio with water views, and good happy hour specials. When you are stuck by the ocean for a day you might as well take advantage of the fresh seafood.

2. If you are looking for somewhere cheap to blow some time you should check out the Bass Pro shop located outside the port. This place is huge. 30,000 gallon fish tank, shooting games, and all the outdoor toys you can look at. There is also a restaurant inside. You could easily waste the day in that place.

3. For $14 you can spend the afternoon in the Museum of Discovery and Science. Some of the exhibits might be childish but still entertaining. The IMAX is where you will want to put your money. Huge screen (5 stories high!) and luxury seating. It is worth the price just to take a nap outside of the truck!

4. There are boat tours all over. For around $20 you can take an Intracoastal Waterway tour. Some of the tours drop you off on islands where you can spend some time. The tours also take you past Millionaires Row where you can see how the rich live in their beach front homes. If an organized tour is not what you are looking for, you can also take water taxis to many of the restaurants and bars. This will provide the same sights and take you to a place you want to be. Not to mention water taxis are very convenient way to get around if you are waiting to pick up freight at the port.

5. What many people consider a hidden gym in Fort Lauderdale is the Antique Car Museum. If you are a car enthusiast, you will not regret the trip over there.

6. As mentioned above, there are multiple beaches you can visit. Not a bad idea if you are already at a port in Florida.
